Migrants’ Integration as a Pre-Requisite for Development: The Role of Cities

Concept notes and papers

This policy brief was written in the framework of the Second Mayoral Forum on Human Mobility, Migration and Development. It highlights the importance of connecting the impact of migration in local development with the integration of migrants in cities and the importance of framing integration as a stepping stone to realizing the development potential of migration. Migrants are important players for cities as actors of territories’ development as they can contribute to the social and economic fabric of their host and home territories. This document follows the premises recognised in the SDGs – that migration and development are intrinsically linked and that, when well-managed, it is possible to mitigate the negative and harness the positive effects that migration and development can have on one another. The policy brief illustrates these points based on the experiences of cities and other regional authorities that are supported by the Joint Migration and Development Initiative (JMDI).
