In 2015, as part of the Agenda for Sustainable Development, the 192 Member States of the United Nations agreed upon 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) to be achieved by 2030. The SDGs are a universal blueprint for ending poverty, removing barriers to equality, securing access to education and essential resources, and stopping climate change and environmental degradation.
Progress on the SDGs has been slow. The goals were agreed upon by national governments, but their success requires substantial action at the local level. Cities, towns, and regions are in a unique position to make great progress on implementing these goals. This important work at the local level requires its own blueprint, complete with innovative, ambitious, and collaborative approaches that engage the private sector, public sector, academic partners, civil society, and community groups.
NewCities and the City of Victoria, with the support of a diverse range of content partners including Women in Cities International (WICI), are convening a two-day event in Victoria in order to:
Together, we want to show that SDGs are a framework that can and should be taken up by anyone and everyone, and that the work we discuss, showcase, and inspire in Victoria can be adapted and replicated throughout Canada.
“Leading by Example” will take place at the Victoria Conference Center on March 10-11, 2020.
