The 25th Conference of the Parties (COP) to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) in Madrid is a key opportunity to assess the actions undertaken so far and to map actions and opportunities ahead. Against this background, the goal of this event is to convene key partners for a discussion on potential commitments to support the decade of action, with a focus on climate change.
Acknowledging that the achievement of both the SDGs and the goals of the Paris Agreement will depend on their mainstreaming and ownership in every neighbourhood, community, and city, the event will focus on local action and commitments. It will take place under the banner of LOCAL 2030. LOCAL 2030 is a global multi-stakeholder initiative that supports the implementation of SDGs at the local level. It brings together UN agencies and related Intergovernmental Organizations, as well as national governments, associations of local and regional governments and partners from the private sector, civil society, research, and philanthropic institutions.
The purpose of the LOCAL 2030 session is to mobilize local action in support of the Decade of Action with a special focus on climate change. With this aim, the LOCAL 2030 event will map upcoming opportunities in 2020 to accelerate 2030 commitments that maximize potential synergies and common outcomes. Examples of such events in 2020 include the UN Sustainable Transport Conference, the UN Ocean Conference, and the 14th Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity.
The LOCAL 2030 event will convene local authorities, the private sector, media, academia and young people, contribute to mobilize partnerships and hold leaders to account with the view to accelerating action on the Sustainable Development Goals. The session will be held as conversations, an easy-to-use method for creating a living discussion of collaborative dialogue among key Local 2030 partners around questions on Climate change and SDGs Localization.
